ID Check for Company Directors: What You Need to Know for 2025

From Autumn 2025, every company director in the UK will be required to complete an official ID check as part of new anti-fraud legislation, known as Director Authorisation. These checks form part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, and they’ll be enforced by Companies House.

If you're a company director, it's essential to understand these changes now. At Williams Denton, we're helping businesses prepare. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Is the ID Check Being Introduced?

The goal is to tackle fraud and improve corporate accountability. By requiring a formal ID check for company directors, Companies House can ensure that only verified individuals are appointed to key positions within UK companies.

These reforms aim to:

  • Reduce fake directorships
  • Increase transparency in UK business
  • Ensure traceability of those in control

Who Must Complete the ID Check for Director Authorisation?

This applies to:

  • All company directors (existing and new)
  • People with Significant Control (PSCs)
  • LLP officers and other specified roles

The Companies House director ID verification will apply to:

  • Private limited companies
  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
  • Other registered structures

If you're involved in running or owning a business registered at Companies House — this applies to you.

How the ID Check for Company Directors Works

The process involves:

  • Uploading valid ID documents (e.g. passport, driving licence)
  • Completing verification via Companies House or an authorised agent
  • Ensuring that all personal details on Companies House exactly match your ID documents (even minor mismatches can cause delays)

For new appointments, directors must verify before being registered. Existing directors will have a deadline to complete the process once it launches.

This Companies House director verification is digital and designed to be secure and efficient, but accuracy is key.

What Happens If You Don't Verify?

If you don't complete the ID check:

  • You cannot legally act as a director
  • Any unverified appointments will be rejected
  • Your company may face delays or non-compliance penalties
